melbourne canberra drive Page 499

Melbourne to Canberra is about 660 km via the M31 Hume and A25 Barton Highway, typically 7–8 hours if you’re sensible. Stick to the Hume out of Melbourne, then peel off near Yass for the Barton into the ACT. Handy stops include Euroa, Albury‑Wodonga and Yass; the highway is mostly 110 km/h and well‑patrolled, so behave. Expect to burn roughly 45–60 L depending on your car (call it AUD $90–$140 in fuel at current prices). Scenic detours via the Snowies are gorgeous but add hours and occasional weather drama. Pack snacks, podcasts, and a sense of humour—the Hume can be flatter than a week‑old sponge.
