melbourne traffic lights australia Page 179

Melbourne traffic lights look familiar until the city throws in its party tricks—hook turns and tram signals—just to keep tourists on their toes.

Where signed in the CBD, right turns are done from the left lane as a hook turn: pull into the marked box, wait for the cross traffic’s green, then go like a local.

Those white “T” tram signals aren’t for you; ignore them and follow the normal red–amber–green and arrow filters like a law-abiding koala.

Expect plenty of red-light and speed cameras at intersections, pedestrian scramble phases at some crossings, and timings that favour trams and buses over your grand plan.

Bottom line: read the signs, obey the arrows, and if in doubt, don’t be the headline.
