mercedes w205 problems Page 5

Lovely to drive, the W205 can still hide a few gremlins where the bean counters got enthusiastic.

In Australia, the usual suspects are well known to independent Merc specialists, so arrive informed and unflappable.

• Timing chain stretch or cam adjuster rattle on some 2.0T petrols (M274), worse with skipped oil changes; listen at cold start
• 7G/9G‑Tronic shudder or flare needing software updates, fluid service, or torque converter attention
• Diesels (OM651/OM654): NOx sensors, EGR/DPF clogging, and intake carbon build‑up over time
• Airmatic/adaptive dampers (if fitted) leaking or creaking; front control‑arm bush wear
• Auxiliary battery and stop/start faults lighting the dash; COMAND glitches and reversing camera failures
• Water pump/thermostat leaks as kilometres climb; occasional brittle coolant hoses
• Rear subframe corrosion on cars from salty/coastal environments—inspect thoroughly
• Sunroof drain blockages causing damp carpets and electrical mischief

Buy on condition and history, get a pre‑purchase inspection and fault scan, and check recalls; your future self will applaud the restraint.
