mitsubishi triton 2.4 petrol engine problems Page 21

The Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 petrol is a tough old unit, but like any ute that’s copped years of trailer duty and servo pies, it has patterns.

  • Timing belt and balance shaft belt wear or failure causing rough running or catastrophic valve damage
  • Oil leaks from rocker cover gasket and cam/crank seals
  • Coil packs/leads and plugs causing misfire under load and soggy performance
  • Idle air control valve and dirty throttle body leading to hunting idle or stalling
  • Cracked exhaust manifold or leaks, bringing noise and a whiff of lost torque
  • Perished engine mounts causing vibration at idle or take-off
  • Cooling issues from clogged radiator or lazy thermostat; ignore it and you’re flirting with a head gasket

Stick to proper servicing—especially timing and balance shaft belts every 90–100,000 km, fresh coolant, and genuine ignition bits—and most of these gremlins stay boring.

If it still shudders, overheats, or hunts at idle, get a compression test and a cooling-system pressure test before throwing parts; it’s cheaper than guessing.

Do that, and the 2.4 will keep soldiering on, even if it won’t win any drag races.
