motor vehicle cost limit 2021-22 Page 64

For the 2021–22 income year in Australia, the motor vehicle (car) cost limit is $60,733.

That’s the cap for depreciation and also effectively caps the GST claim, with the maximum GST credit being about $5,521 (one‑eleventh of the limit).

It applies to “cars” (under 1 tonne payload and fewer than 9 seats); heavier utes and trucks generally aren’t caught by this cap.

Luxury Car Tax is a separate circus altogether—different thresholds—but the car cost limit still governs your claimable depreciation.

In short: buy above the limit if you fancy, but your tax deductions won’t follow you past it. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
