Dutch road-racer Jan Kampen was the motivation behind Lino Tonti’s 850 Le Mans, Mk 1. Tonti first showed his prototype at the 1972 Premio Varrone design competition, and by 73 had the concept largely sorted sufficiently to enter the 1973 Barcelona 24-hour. Finishing an amazing 5th, the prototype was to enter production but with both Moto Guzzi and Benelli owned by Argentin businessman Alejandro de Tomaso, the de Tomaso choose to use the Benelli Six to spearhead his entry into sports bikes.

Moto Guzzi shelved the Le Mans for a couple of years, eventually being shown at the Milan Motorcycle Show in November 1975 and entering production in 1976.
