The Nikon D40 is long retired, so “new” pricing is basically unicorn territory in Australia.
If you do find unopened old stock, expect collector tax: roughly $400–$700 AUD for a boxed kit, sometimes more. On Tradingpost or local classifieds, used bodies typically run about $80–$200 AUD, or $120–$250 AUD with the 18–55mm kit lens depending on condition and shutter count. It still shoots nicely in good light, but you’re giving up modern comforts like video, live view, and low-light wizardry. For a bargain learner’s DSLR, fine—just don’t pay boutique prices for 2006 tech.
