nissan patrol y61 problems

The Nissan Patrol Y61 (GU) is tough as old boots, but time and bush tracks expose the usual gremlins. Luckily, most are predictable and fixable if you know where to look. If you’re shopping or diagnosing, keep an eye on these:

  • Early 3.0 ZD30 diesels can suffer catastrophic failures from overboost/heat; look for ECU updates, EGT monitoring, or a well-documented rebuild.
  • Steering shimmy (“death wobble”) from worn panhard/track rod bushes, king pin bearings, or poor wheel balance.
  • Manual 5th-gear spline wear and clutch issues on worked/towing rigs.
  • Intercooler and intake leaks, EGR/MAF gunk, and smoky turbos if servicing’s been optimistic.
  • Rear coil tower and chassis stress cracks on heavily laden tourers; plus tired shocks and bushings.
  • Rust around the rear barn doors, floors and sills; alternators unhappy after mud baths.
  • Age-related electrics: window regulators, sensors and earths playing hide-and-seek.

A thorough pre-purchase inspection, compression/leak-down on ZD30s, and a test drive on rougher roads will separate heroes from hand grenades. Maintain it properly and a good Y61 will still outlast your patience for fuel bills.
