nissan x trail 2008 problems Page 32

The 2008 Nissan X‑Trail (T31) is a handy bush-and-beach box, but it’s not without gremlins as it ages.

Main watch-outs below—nothing tragic, just the usual “pay attention and it’ll be fine” arrangement:

  • CVT auto: shuddering, whining, or overheating on hills; fluid changes and cooler upgrades help, rebuilds get spendy.
  • Diesel (2.0 dCi): DPF clogging on short trips, EGR soot, occasional turbo or intercooler leaks.
  • QR25DE petrol: coil packs and sensors more than bottom-end drama; listen for timing-chain rattle on cold start.
  • Wheel bearings, suspension bushes, and rear diff/4WD coupling causing ABS/traction lights.
  • Air-con compressors and window regulators; plus the Takata airbag recall—check the VIN status.
  • Water leaks/rust around tailgate seals and roof rails, especially on coastal cars.

A proper pre-purchase inspection and a long test drive (including a steep climb) will tell you most of what you need.

If it checks out, it’s a tough family hauler; if it shudders and whistles like a kettle, negotiate—or walk.
