nissan x trail t31 diesel problems Page 2

The T31 X-Trail diesel is a sturdy unit, but it throws a tantrum if you only ever potter to the shops and skip maintenance. Most gripes revolve around emissions kit and a few rubber bits that age about as gracefully as a sunbaked dash. Here are the usual suspects owners report:

• DPF soot build-up triggering warnings or limp mode after lots of short trips; needs proper regens and the right low-ash oil.
• EGR valve and intake soot causing rough idle, hesitation, and the odd smoke show.
• Intercooler/turbo hoses splitting or clamps loosening, leading to lost boost and a whistling soundtrack nobody ordered.
• Dual-mass flywheel and clutch wear on manuals: shudder, chatter, and a leg workout in traffic.

Regular highway runs, timely servicing, and a thorough pre-purchase inspection will keep most of that drama at arm’s length—because limp mode is not a lifestyle.
