Short answer: the NSW EV stamp duty exemption has left the building as of 1 January 2024.
From that date, EVs in NSW pay the normal motor vehicle duty—roughly 3% up to $45,000, then $1,350 + 5% of the value over $45,000; not exactly free, but still cheaper than a V8’s fuel bill.
If you bought and registered an eligible EV before the cutoff (or had a signed contract under the transitional rules), you could still qualify; everyone else is back on the standard rates.
The old exemption covered eligible EVs under about $78,000 between 2021 and 2023, but that’s now history.
Policy can change faster than a traffic light at peak hour, so confirm with NSW Revenue before you celebrate—or commiserate.
