Yes, you can upgrade a vehicle’s GVM in NSW, but it must be engineered and certified under the Vehicle Safety Compliance Certification Scheme (VSCCS) in line with VSB 14—no backyard fairy dust allowed.
Pre-registration SSM kits are fine; post-registration upgrades can be approved by a licensed certifier, provided you don’t exceed the original axle, tyre and brake capacities.
NSW does not accept post-registration increases to Gross Combination Mass (GCM), so your towing limit won’t magically grow—towbar ratings and state limits still rule the roost.
If the new GVM pushes you over 4.5 tonnes, it becomes a heavy vehicle: different registration category and you may need an LR/MR licence.
After sign-off, lodge the VSCCS certificate with Service NSW so your rego shows the new GVM, and tell your insurer before they find out the noisy way.
Expect supporting hardware (suspension, sometimes brakes) and a proper placard; “paper-only” upgrades are the motoring equivalent of unicorns.
