Short answer: you can’t run a free NSW rego check with only a VIN—the Service NSW tool wants the number plate.
If you’ve only got a VIN, buy a PPSR certificate; it’ll confirm finance owing, write‑off and stolen status, and match the VIN to make/model, but it won’t guarantee current registration.
Best move is to get the seller’s plate number (or a photo of the rego label/plate); if they dodge, that’s your cue to dodge too.
Once you have the plate, use the Service NSW “Check a vehicle registration” tool to see status and expiry.
Still stuck? Call or visit Service NSW with a legitimate interest and they may assist.
It’s five minutes that can save you five grand and a world of grief.
