In NSW, vehicle stamp duty (motor vehicle duty) is based on the vehicle’s dutiable value—new or used, same maths.
It’s 3% up to $45,000, then $1,350 plus 5% of the value over $45,000.
Example: a $30,000 hatch is about $900 in duty; a $60,000 SUV is $1,350 + 5% of $15,000 = $2,100.
There are exemptions and concessions for specific situations, but most private purchases land squarely in those bands.
Rates and thresholds can change, so sanity-check with the NSW Revenue duty calculator before you start counting coins in the console.
