You don’t actually “transfer” NSW rego to Victoria; you cancel it in NSW and register the car anew in VIC.
Budget for a Victorian roadworthy certificate, VicRoads registration (12 months is typically around $700–$1,200 depending on postcode and vehicle), standard plates, and motor vehicle duty based on the car’s value.
VicRoads may also require an identity/vehicle inspection, so add roughly a hundred bucks and some queue time.
Hand the NSW plates back and Service NSW will refund any unused rego minus a small cancellation fee.
Sort it soon after moving—driving around for months on interstate plates makes neither police nor insurers smile.
For precise figures, check current VicRoads and Service NSW fee calculators.
