To check a number plate in Canberra (ACT), use the ACT government’s rego check service—punch in the plate (and sometimes VIN) and it returns registration status, expiry, make/model and CTP insurer.
It’s free, quick, and doesn’t reveal personal details (no, you can’t stalk the owner).
Plates registered outside the ACT must be checked with that state’s system—NSW, QLD, and friends all have their own tools.
If the vehicle was recently sold or renewed, allow a little time for the database to update, because bureaucracy doesn’t do “instant”.
Only rely on official government checks when buying; screenshots and “mate’s word” are about as trustworthy as a bald tyre in a monsoon.
