old telegraph track 2023 Page 2

The Old Telegraph Track up Cape York is a dry-season-only caper, and 2023 was no exception—aim for June to September when the creeks behave. Expect deep, notorious crossings like Palm Creek, Gunshot, Cockatoo, and Nolans Brook, so bring a high-clearance 4WD, a snorkel, proper recovery gear, and nerves of steel. Drop tyre pressures, travel with another vehicle, and assess each crossing from the bank—this is croc country, not a kiddie pool. Camping requires a Queensland Parks booking, and the Jardine River ferry pass is separate, so sort permits before you wave goodbye to reception. Conditions change every wet season, so check Queensland Parks updates and local roadhouse intel before you dive into the ruts. Treat the track with respect, pack out your rubbish, and you’ll come home with a yarn that makes suburbia look very beige.
