order new number plate Page 26

Ordering new number plates in Australia is a fairly dull affair, but mercifully simple.

Start with your state road authority (VicRoads, Service NSW, TMR QLD, Access Canberra, DoT WA, etc.)—apply online or at a service centre, choosing standard plates, remakes, or personalised designs via Vplates/myPlates/PPQ.

Bring ID and your registration details; if the plates were stolen, file a police report and don’t keep driving on one lonely plate like a pirate—your authority will issue replacements and cancel the old number.

Hand in any damaged plates if asked, pay the fee, and decide on pickup or post; then fit them securely with anti-theft screws unless you fancy buying another set next month.

Rules and fees vary by state, so check the official site for the fine print.
