painting alloy wheels black Page 3

Yes, you can paint alloy wheels black without turning them into lumpy liquorice. Clean and degrease thoroughly, then sand to a uniform key with 400–600 grit; wipe with wax/grease remover and mask tyres, valves and hubs like your life depends on it. Use an etch or epoxy primer for aluminium in light coats, let it flash, then lay down a quality wheel-specific black paint in 3–4 thin passes. Finish with 2–3 coats of clear for durability and gloss; keep the can 20–25 cm away and move like you’re buttering toast—even, patient, smug. Allow proper cure time (at least 24 hours, longer if it’s cold), and avoid pressure washing for a week. If the wheels are kerb-rashed, fill with metal putty and sand smooth first, or hand it to a pro to avoid a result that screams ‘backyard special’. Work in a ventilated area, wear a mask, and test on a hidden spot—your lungs and ego will thank you.
