perth to broome by car Page 5

The run from Perth to Broome is about 2,200–2,400 km, depending on whether you take the inland Great Northern Highway or the longer coastal route. It’s roughly 22–26 hours of wheel time, so plan 3–5 days unless you fancy chatting to road trains and kangaroos at 2 am. Best done in the dry season (April–October); during the Wet, flooding and closures can turn your itinerary into modern art. Fuel and food gaps can be big—top up often, carry water, and don’t skimp on a spare tyre and a proper jack. Highlights if you meander: Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Coral Bay/Exmouth, Karijini, and Eighty Mile Beach—yes, it’s a detour, but you’re not commuting. A 2WD is fine on the highways, but check road conditions and book beds ahead, or bring a swag and embrace the stars.
