In VIC it’s called a Certificate of Roadworthiness (RWC), issued by a licensed tester for vehicle sale/transfer, re-registering an unregistered car, or clearing a defect—not for routine rego renewal.

Expect to pay roughly AUD 150–300 for the inspection, plus whatever it costs to fix anything that fails; a recheck fee may apply.

The RWC covers safety basics like tyres, brakes, lights, steering, suspension and structural rust.

Once issued, it’s typically valid for 30 days for transfer purposes in Victoria.
