In Australia, a plate number search is for rego status, not Sherlocking someone’s identity. Use your state’s transport site (Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR QLD, DIT SA, etc.) to check by plate; you’ll get registration status, expiry, make/model, and sometimes the VIN. You won’t see owner details—privacy laws and all that. Buying used? Do a PPSR check with the VIN for finance owing, write-off and stolen status; it’s cheap and official. Match the plates to the VIN and engine number, and if anything smells dodgy, walk away. Found it on Tradingpost? Ask the seller for the VIN and rego—any legit seller won’t flinch.
