In Victoria, “proof of vehicle ownership” usually means an original receipt or invoice that lists the VIN/chassis, engine number, date of sale, price, and the buyer and seller’s names and addresses—signed by the seller.
Acceptable docs include a dealer invoice or contract of sale, a private sale receipt, or an auction house invoice; import/build cases need the relevant approvals.
A Victorian registration certificate is not proof of ownership, and a bank statement or a scribbled Post-it won’t cut it either.
For transfers or first-time Vic registration you’ll also need the usual VicRoads paperwork (ID, completed forms, roadworthy where required), so keep it tidy and legible.
When in doubt, get the seller to re-issue a proper receipt with the VIN and both parties’ details—future-you will buy them a coffee.
