qld gvm upgrade Page 185

Chasing a QLD GVM upgrade because your ute now carries half of Bunnings? Sensible, but do it properly or the law will chew you up and spit bolts. In Queensland, upgrades must be certified by an Approved Person and documented with a mod plate; pre‑registration kits (federally approved) travel with the vehicle nationwide, while post‑registration upgrades are state-based and recognised in QLD. The kit usually involves heavier‑duty suspension and testing, and it does not let you exceed axle ratings or the vehicle’s published limits—assume no change to tow capacity or GCM unless the paperwork explicitly says so. After certification, update your rego and your insurer, and weigh the rig fully loaded to confirm you’re legal. Expect to part with a few thousand dollars and a day or two off the road, which is cheaper than fines, defects, or voided insurance. If you’re adding barwork, canopy and a long‑range tank, get the upgrade first—building on quicksand never ends well.
