In Queensland, it’s illegal to hold or use a mobile phone while driving—yes, even when stopped at traffic lights or in traffic.
Open licence drivers may use hands‑free, Bluetooth, or a phone mounted in a cradle for navigation, but you must not have the phone in your hand or rest it on any part of your body.
Learners and P1 drivers (typically under 25) aren’t allowed to use a phone in any way while driving—no hands‑free, no Bluetooth, no speaker, no CarPlay/Android Auto.
Heavy fines and demerit points apply, and repeat offences within 12 months attract extra demerits.
Queensland also uses fixed and mobile cameras to detect illegal phone use, so assume you’re being watched and keep the device out of your hands.
