Queensland follows the national VSB1 rules for light trailers, so the brake thresholds are mercifully straightforward.
Up to 750 kg ATM: no service brakes required (but safety chains are). Over 750–2000 kg ATM: brakes on at least one axle; override mechanical or electric/hydraulic are acceptable. Over 2000–4500 kg ATM: brakes on all wheels plus a breakaway system that applies and holds the brakes if the trailer parts company with the tow car.
Electric controllers in the cabin are the norm for heavier setups; override brakes are for the lighter, simpler stuff. These are Queensland Transport’s take on national standards (VSB1/ADR), so check your trailer’s plate and build accordingly. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
