queensland red p plate rules Page 930

Queensland’s Red P (P1) rules are designed to keep you shiny side up and the insurance premiums down. Here’s the gist:

  • Display red P plates front and rear, and keep to the P1 period before graduating to green P2.
  • Zero BAC—no ifs, no “just a shandy,” and absolutely no drugs in your system.
  • No mobile phone use at all while driving (yep, that includes hands‑free and speaker).
  • Between 11pm and 5am, you can carry no more than one passenger under 21 (exceptions apply for immediate family and certain work/education needs).
  • No high‑powered vehicles unless you’ve got an approved exemption, and you must obey posted speed limits like everyone else.

Demerits are limited, penalties bite harder, and excuses impress exactly no one. Check Queensland TMR for the latest details before you hit the road.
