In Victoria, “red plates” usually means the Club Permit Scheme plates for classic or collector vehicles.

They let you drive a vehicle that’s typically 25+ years old on the road for a limited number of days—choose 45 or 90 days per year—with every outing logged like an obedient schoolkid.

You must be a financial member of a VicRoads-approved car club, keep the car roadworthy, and remember it’s not a licence to daily-drive it to the office for glory and croissants.

Fees and insurance are lower than full rego, but the rules bite if you ignore them, so keep that logbook honest.

In short: weekend fun and club runs, yes; ride-sharing hustle and school-bus duties, no.

For the fine print, check VicRoads before you get the maroon bling.
