First, wash and dry the area—no point polishing dirt, unless you like free pinstripes.
If it’s paint transfer, a dab of isopropyl alcohol or bug/tar remover on a microfibre will usually lift it; follow with a light polish to restore the gloss.
For stubborn marks, try a clay bar, then a small amount of fine cutting compound by hand; work gently, check often, and stop the moment colour shows on the cloth.
If you can feel the mark with a fingernail, it’s likely through the clear coat—time for touch-up or a detailer, not heroics. Finish with wax or sealant to keep future scuffs at bay.
