Road mobile phone cameras are the nosy cousins of speed cams, using high-resolution lenses and AI to spot drivers handling a handset instead of the wheel.
They operate from fixed and portable rigs and often use infrared, so your tinted windscreen and a rainy Tuesday won’t grant invisibility.
If they flag you, a human reviews the image before any fine or demerit points are issued, and penalties vary by Australian state and licence class (provisional drivers usually face stricter rules).
Hands-free via a proper cradle and voice control is the safe, legal route; touching the phone while moving is a quick donation to state revenue.
Signage requirements differ by jurisdiction, so don’t rely on a warning sign to save the day.
Best strategy? Keep your mitts off the phone and you’ll glide past un-pecked.
