Victoria’s road rules largely mirror the Australian Road Rules, with a few local quirks that will ticket your wallet faster than a hook turn surprises a tourist.
Speed limits are strictly enforced: default urban is 50 km/h unless signed, school zones drop to 40 km/h at set times, and roadworks mean what they say.
Mobile devices: full licence holders may use hands‑free or a phone in a proper cradle; learners and P‑platers must not use phones or other portable devices at all.
Cyclist passing laws require at least 1.0 m when ≤ 60 km/h and 1.5 m above 60 km/h.
Seatbelts for every occupant, always; BAC limit is 0.05 for full licence, zero for L and P drivers; and yes, give way to pedestrians when turning.
Roundabouts: give way to vehicles already in the roundabout; and in the CBD, watch for signed hook turns.
Fines and demerits change, so check official sources; consult official documentation for exact figures.
