road trip to south australia Page 32

Planning a road trip to South Australia? From Melbourne it’s roughly 725 km to Adelaide via the Western Hwy, or take the Great Ocean Road through Mount Gambier and the Coonawarra if you fancy scenery with your servo pies. Once in SA, point the bonnet at the Barossa for shiraz, the Fleurieu for beaches, or the Flinders Ranges if you like rocks older than your jokes. SA has strict fruit fly restrictions—don’t roll in with a boot full of contraband bananas. Rural highways mostly top out at 110 km/h; fuel can be sparse north and west, and roos love dusk like bad decisions. Pack water, a proper spare, and book beds ahead in peak periods—your future self will thank you.
