Before you bolt a bedroom to your ute, check the numbers: the vehicle’s roof/canopy maximum roof load and your rack’s dynamic/static ratings must comfortably exceed the tent’s weight.
Use a full-length platform rack or reinforced canopy tracks, mount with the supplied channels and rated hardware, and keep the tent low, centred, and forward of the rear axle to tame sway.
Orient the hinge so it opens away from traffic (often passenger side in Australia), set the ladder at a friendly angle, and make sure it clears your awning and tailgate circus.
After the first shakedown, re-torque the bolts, recheck straps, and remember the new reality: higher centre of gravity, extra wind drag, and carparks that suddenly feel like limbo contests.
If in doubt, check the vehicle and tent maker’s limits and your state’s load rules; gravity is negotiable, compliance is not.
