Asking for the “safest SUV 2023” is like asking which lifesaver makes the best cuppa—there isn’t one winner, but ANCAP’s latest protocol sorts the heroes from the show‑ponies.

Look for a recent 5‑star ANCAP rating (2020+ protocols) and a full suite of driver aids: AEB with pedestrian/cyclist/junction assist, lane support, blind‑spot and rear cross‑traffic, plus a centre airbag where offered.

Newer models with that gear routinely score top marks, but check the exact variant and build date because some trims quietly drop key features.

When you’ve short‑listed a few, confirm their ANCAP details (model, year and spec) and compare scores across Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Vulnerable Road User and Safety Assist.

If you’re buying used, ensure any cameras/radars are intact and calibrated—five stars mean little if a bumper prang knocked the sensors cross‑eyed.

In short: pick the SUV with the most up‑to‑date 5‑star rating and the fattest active‑safety list, then enjoy the school run with righteous smugness.
