sat phones

Satellite phones, or "sat phones," are the off-grid lifelines for those who find themselves in the middle of nowhere—literally anywhere under the sky but out of mobile coverage.

They connect directly to satellites orbiting the Earth, offering reliable voice and data communication where regular mobiles drool in defeat.

• Coverage: Global, often including polar regions.
• Cost: New devices range from approximately AUD 1,000 to 2,500; call rates can be eye-watering.
• Use: Ideal for adventurers, remote workers, and emergency situations.

Check Tradingpost or CarShowroom for used devices, and remember, they’re no substitute for your smartphone unless you fancy paying a premium for a line to nowhere.
