scenic drives in melbourne Page 14

Melbourne’s got more scenic tarmac than a postcard rack, provided you escape before the brunch crowd wakes up. Point the bonnet towards the Great Ocean Road for cliff-hugging bends and sea spray, but start early unless you enjoy tailgating campervans. Closer in, the Black Spur between Healesville and Marysville is a ribbon through towering ferns, while the Dandenong Ranges Tourist Road dishes up twisties plus scones at every second teahouse. A Yarra Valley loop via Healesville–Toolangi–Kinglake brings vineyards, sweepers, and an excuse to “tour” a cellar door or three (designated driver, obviously). Mornington Peninsula’s Arthurs Seat and the back beaches to Flinders give you bayside views, while Mount Macedon and Hanging Rock deliver cool-climate curves without the sand. Check road conditions, dodge long weekends, and never pass a good country bakery—fuel for you is as vital as fuel for the car.
