In Victoria, the deal is simple: if the car’s moving, your seat belt should be too—properly adjusted, clicked, and across shoulder and lap where it belongs.
Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts whenever they’re available, and the driver is responsible for anyone under 16 being correctly restrained.
Children under 7 must use an approved restraint suited to their age/size: under 6 months rear‑facing; 6 months to under 4 rear‑ or forward‑facing with a harness; 4 to under 7 in a forward‑facing seat or booster with a harness or seat belt.
Kids under 4 can’t ride in the front seat if the vehicle has two or more rows; from 4 to under 7, the front seat is allowed only if all rear seats are occupied by younger children.
One person per belt—no sharing, no tucking the sash under your arm because it’s “comfier.” Break the rules and expect fines and demerit points, along with a lecture you won’t enjoy.
