In plain terms, a sedan is a passenger car with a three-box layout: engine bay, cabin, and a separate boot.
It usually has four doors and seats four or five, unlike a hatchback where the rear door opens into the cabin.
In Australia we say “sedan”; older UK jargon was “saloon”, which sounds like it should serve warm ale.
Compared with SUVs and wagons, a sedan sits lower, rides calmer, and keeps your luggage isolated from wet dogs and surf wax.
If it’s got a liftback tailgate it’s not a sedan; if it’s only two doors, it’s likely a coupe. Simple enough, even without a glossary.
