sitting in front seat age Page 2000

In Australia, kids under 4 aren’t allowed in the front seat of a car with two or more rows—no debate, no “but they asked nicely”.

Ages 4 to under 7 must sit in the back too, unless every rear seat is already occupied by children under 7; then they can ride up front in an approved child restraint.

From 7 years old they may sit in the front, but a booster is wise until the seatbelt fits properly—many kids don’t get a decent fit until around 145 cm.

If your car only has one row, the correct restraint still applies, and never put a rear-facing seat in front of an active airbag.

Rules are nationally consistent with minor state quirks, so check your local road authority if you’re unsure.

Short version: the back seat is safest; the front seat is a privilege earned with age, height and common sense.
