solid state battery news

Ah, solid-state batteries—the dream of electric vehicles everywhere, promising longer range and fewer fires than your average li-ion cell. As of 2024, the news is a mixed bag of tantalising prototypes and cautious optimism. Companies like Toyota and QuantumScape are flirting with commercialisation, but mass production remains a glimmer on the horizon, not a showroom reality.

Expect whispers about improved energy density approaching 400 Wh/kg and charging times that could make your morning cuppa longer than the battery top-up. But don’t hold your breath for affordable prices just yet; initial vehicles featuring these batteries might start north of $80,000 AUD.

Keep an eye on Tradingpost and CarShowroom for the latest EVs, but for now, solid-state batteries remain more science project than driveway staple.
