South Australia’s salt lakes are otherworldly sheets of white and pink, with Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre the moody headliner at the nation’s lowest point. One month it’s a blinding salt pan; after big outback rains, it can spread into a shallow inland sea. For pink-tinged eye candy, try Lake Bumbunga near Lochiel or Lake MacDonnell by Penong, which can do a pink–green split when conditions line up. Best viewing is late winter to spring; stick to formed tracks, check SA Parks access and road reports, and don’t drive on the crust unless you fancy explaining why your car is now modern art.
