In South Australia, motor vehicle stamp duty is calculated on the car’s dutiable value using stepped brackets.
It’s roughly 1% on the first $1,000, 2% on the slice from $1,001–$2,000, 3% from $2,001–$3,000, and then 4% on every dollar over $3,000.
Example: a $20,000 passenger car clocks in at about $60 + 4% of $17,000 = roughly $740 in duty; at $50,000 it’s about $1,940.
It’s a tax on excitement, basically—check the SA government calculator or your dealer quote for the exact number on your specific car.
