Victoria’s street signs follow the Australian Road Rules and AS 1742, which means the colours are doing more than just brightening your commute.
Red-and-white regulatory signs tell you what you must or must not do, yellow diamonds warn about hazards ahead, and green guide signs point you in the vaguely correct direction.
Default limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on rural roads, and up to 110 km/h on some freeways, while school zones drop to 40 km/h during posted times.
Parking signs are a choose-your-own-adventure with arrows—read every line, check days and times, and assume inspectors can spot a dodgy park from orbit.
Expect plenty of speed and red-light cameras, with fines and demerit points administered by VicRoads and local councils, so “I didn’t see it” won’t fly.
When in doubt, slow down, obey the sign, and save the arguing for the group chat.
