In Australia you can’t just swap number plates between cars like trading hats; plates are assigned to a specific vehicle record by your state or territory authority.
Legal transfers are usually limited to personalised or custom plates you own, and they must be officially reassigned—same state, correct owner details, fees paid, paperwork updated.
Driving a car wearing plates not assigned to it is illegal and can earn you fines, defects, and a very awkward chat by the roadside (impoundment isn’t unheard of).
If selling or buying a car with personalised plates, either transfer the plates properly or have standard plates issued before handover.
Check the exact process with your authority (VicRoads, Service NSW, TMR QLD, DoT WA, etc.) and keep receipts; the only thing you should swap casually is driving playlists.
