Short answer: no, you can’t just swap number plates between cars in NSW like trading footy cards.
Standard plates are tied to a specific vehicle; bolting them onto another is illegal and will earn you fines faster than a dodgy U-turn.
If they’re personalised plates, you can transfer them via Service NSW, paying the fees and ensuring both vehicles are NSW-registered and (ideally) in the same name and category.
The proper process is to order or transfer plates through Service NSW, fit them when told to, and hand in any plates you’re replacing—no driveway plate-swapping theatrics.
Tell your insurer, keep your rego and CTP current, and don’t drive a car wearing plates it’s not assigned to.
When in doubt, ask Service NSW before the highway patrol asks you.
