tips for driving manual Page 2

Learning manual? Relax—every kangaroo hop is just the car applauding your enthusiasm.

Set the seat so your left foot fully depresses the clutch, find the bite point, then launch with smooth throttle—about 1,500–2,000 rpm in most modest petrols, a bit lower in diesels.

Use the handbrake for hill starts, don’t ride the clutch, and shift up around where the engine feels happy, not wheezy.

On downshifts, clutch in, blip the throttle to match revs, then release smoothly; no need to heel-and-toe unless you’re auditioning for Bathurst.

If you stall, clutch in, neutral, restart—no drama; practice in an empty car park until it’s muscle memory.

Finally, look ahead, keep speeds legal, and remember: a gentle left foot saves clutches and friendships.
