tow bar rules victoria Page 403

In Victoria, tow to the lowest limit: your vehicle’s rated capacity, the tow bar’s plate rating, or the trailer’s limit—whichever is smallest wins.

Brakes are required on trailers over 750 kg ATM (at least one axle up to 2,000 kg), and over 2,000 kg you’ll need brakes on all wheels with an automatic breakaway system.

Use compliant safety chains: one chain up to 2.5 t, and two chains from 2.5–3.5 t—no, a bit of rope doesn’t count.

If the trailer blocks your view past the car, fit proper towing mirrors; also make sure lights and the number plate are visible and working.

There’s no special towing speed for light vehicles in Vic—just obey the posted limit and keep a safe gap, because physics isn’t negotiable.
