towing regulations victoria Page 2

Towing in Victoria is simple: never exceed the lowest rated limit of your vehicle, towbar, or trailer—whichever number is smallest wins.

Trailers over 750 kg ATM must have brakes, and anything over 2000 kg needs a breakaway system that stops it if things go pear-shaped.

Your trailer needs working lights, reflectors and a visible number plate; fit safety chains, secure the load properly, and absolutely no passengers in the trailer (pets included).

If the trailer blocks your rear view, you must use proper towing mirrors—heroic neck craning is not ADR-compliant.

Stick to posted speed limits, leave extra stopping room, and if it’s swaying, that’s a setup problem, not “character”.

Confirm your car’s maximum tow capacity and towball download from the owner’s manual and compliance plates; when in doubt, check VicRoads’ official guidance.
