Driving Melbourne to Adelaide gives you two flavours: the quick inland run on the Western/Dukes Highway, or the scenic coastal meander via the Great Ocean Road and Princes Highway.
Inland, common stops include Ballarat, Ararat, Stawell, Horsham, Nhill, Bordertown, Keith, Coonalpyn, Tailem Bend, Murray Bridge and Mount Barker—proper fuel, coffee and “how good’s the bakery” territory.
Coastal, expect Geelong, Torquay, Lorne, Apollo Bay, Port Campbell, Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Portland, Nelson, Mount Gambier, Robe, Kingston SE and Meningie before cutting back inland.
It’s roughly 730 km via the direct route and significantly longer hugging the coast, so plan your snacks and sanity accordingly.
Either way, you’ll find enough towns to keep the esky cold and the arguments about who packed the charger warm.
