toyota hilux 4 wheel drive problems Page 5

The Toyota HiLux 4WD is tough, but even a brick chips if you throw it at enough corrugations.

Here are the gremlins owners commonly report in Australia, especially on hard‑worked or modified utes:

• 1KD-FTV diesels (circa 2005–2015): injector/seat wear, cold-start rattle and blow-by; fixed with new injectors and seats.
• 2015-on 1GD-FTV: DPF clogging from short trips; look for software updates and proper regens.
• Front ADD/diff actuator or vacuum issues: flashing 4WD light and no engagement.
• CV boots/joints and wheel bearings after beach or mud work; lifts accelerate wear.
• EGR/intake soot build-up; periodic cleans help.
• Manual clutch shudder/DMF wear, and autos getting hot when towing—an auxiliary cooler helps.

Service it on time, test 4WD engagement, listen for front-end clicks, check DPF history, and if you’re shopping on Tradingpost, favour tidy service records over tall tales.
